In 2021 the Old Route 66 Association of Texas partnered with the Historic 6th Street on Route 66 Association and the San Jacinto Neighborhood Association to help fulfill a long time goal of the Historic 6th Street on Route 66 Association.
That goal was to have ROUTE 66 painted on their local San Jacinto neighborhood water tower. The Historic 6th Street on Route 66 Association began asking the City of Amarillo about the possibility in 2009. After a decade, it was finally on the schedule for their water tower to be repainted! Now was the time to ask about adding the ROUTE 66 again! The Historic 6th Street on Route 66 Association felt that since this project would not only appeal to the local businesses but to the local neighbors and it would add another reason for Texas 66 travelers to visit, stop and stay, bringing all three associations together to work on this project could make history! It was also determined that if AMARILLO 66 was painted instead of Route 66 everyone viewing a photo of the water tower [after their vacation, on Facebook or in an Art Gallery] would know where the photo was taken, benefiting the City of Amarillo as well.
With the 3 non-profit Associations working together the idea was presented to the Amarillo City Council. It was agreed that with a policy change approval and $18,000.00 we could make it happen! AND THANKS to EVERY “PAINT AMARILLO 66 on our WATER TOWER” project DONOR we were able to raise the $18,000.00 (plus start a maintenance fund).
The City announced in April that the painting should take place in August/September of 2022! We are excited to see this project become reality.
